In Advisory we examine issues that affect our lives in and out of school, including friendship, stereotypes, and equality.

Success in school, now and in the future, is supported as we address concerns regarding stress and time management. In addition, wellness is promoted as we explore topics of self-esteem, substance abuse, and body issues.

We also look at what constitutes success in life and school; we consider the concept of 21st Century Skills. The world is changing. What does it mean to be creative and innovative?

In addition, 11th-grade advisory students monitor their progress through the A-G requirements for graduation and college acceptance. This work is done sometimes through Naviance an online program ELAPA uses that teaches college readiness. Each student has a Naviance Account. Each student is required to have a portfolio that must contain all the 11th-grade requirements, including a resume and college applications.  A complete list of requirements will be posted soon.

Purpose. The purpose of advisory is to provide students with an opportunity to:

  •  form bonds with others who have different experiences, interests, and ideas than our own
  •  develop a trusting relationship with adults in their school
  •  support others within and outside of the community who may need our assistance
  •  enhance communication and interpersonal skills
  •  freely express personal concerns, needs, and frustrations in a non-judgmental environment
  •  participate in the creation and achievement of common goals
  •  build problem-solving techniques
  •  showcase academic accomplishments and personal achievements

Goal.  The goal of advisory is to create a community of students who:
•  respect and value diverse backgrounds, opinions, and perspectives
• have a sense of self-worth, purpose, and belonging
• demonstrate integrity and virtue
• have (and provide) a support system of peers and adults who can be easily accessed in time of need
• see themselves playing a valuable role in the health and wellbeing of their community and the world
• are able to identify problems and develop solutions

Additional Objectives Specific to 11th Grade:

Students will

  • participate in activities that build community and foster empathy.
  • participate in oral discussions and share written reflections.
  • observe online etiquette
  • prepare for Student-Led Conferences and create an online portfolio This portfolio will help students reflect on and show evidence of their progress academically, artistically, and personally.
  • understand importance of monitoring their GPA
  • research colleges and begin considering personal preferences
  • show understanding of terms related to College and Career goals

Grading: Attendance is very important as Advisory is experiential by nature and most tasks include collaboration and communication with peers. If a student has an absence (even an excused absence), the student will need to work with the teacher to complete any missing tasks or arrange to do an alternate task to make up for the missing credit.
